Josh Brolin opens up about his nicotine pouch dependency, acknowledging that he even used them during the night. Speaking candidly on a podcast about his battle with addiction, Brolin shared that his nicotine pouch use was so ingrained in his routine that he would sometimes apply one while asleep. The actor, who married Kathryn Boyd in 2016, discussed his struggles with addiction on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast.
On the show, Brolin, best known for portraying Thanos in the Avengers films, confessed, “I’ve got a pouch in my lip, and I’m not lying, 24/7. Then I started taking them out and putting them on the nightstand.” He demonstrated this by opening a Zym pouch, adding, “My wife would hear this in the middle of the night. I don’t even know I’m doing it, I’m asleep.”
Brolin also expressed concerns about his habit influencing his children. He is a father to daughter Eden, 30, and son Trevor, 36, from a previous marriage to Alice Adair. He feared that his young children might imitate his behavior, explaining, "My kid might pick it up at two years old. Even if there's no nicotine, she could get sick from it. Instead of quitting, I’d try to teach them, ‘Stay away from Daddy’s stuff. Daddy needs that.’”
Before switching to pouches, Brolin had been using nicotine lozenges, but they took a toll on his dental health. He explained, "They dissolve quickly but taste awful—like gasoline. I used to keep them between my gum and teeth, but I ended up with seven cavities. That’s why I moved to the pouches. The lozenges had a lot of sugar.”
He also recalled an experience during a shoot in Jordan, where a local vendor offered him stronger doses of nicotine. “We’re in Jordan, and a guy approached me with 40-milligram packets, marked with a skull and crossbones. I said, ‘I can’t do that,’” he shared. But after running low on his own supply, he decided to give it a try. “I put it in my mouth for no more than 20 seconds,” he said. “I swear, I had to cancel dinner that night. I was completely nauseous.”
